When is Earth Month? What is Earth Month?
Earth Month lasts throughout the month of April — an extension of Earth Day, which takes place every April 22nd. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes. Senator Nelson conceived the holiday after witnessing a string of environmental disasters, including a huge oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. By working with Hayes, Senator Nelson hoped to highlight public awareness of air and water pollution with the fervor of anti-war protests. Decades later, Earth Day continues to bring awareness to important environmental issues.
Expanding the reach of Earth Day across the course of an entire month, Earth Month seeks only to bolster environmental activism and awareness. This expanded celebration allows organizations to further spread the message of Earth Day; for example, National Geographic took the month to highlight the cognitive abilities of marine animals and explore how we think about ocean ecosystems.
Why is Earth Month Important?
Earth Month is important because of its real world impact on environmental awareness and activism. Here are a few Earth Month facts that show just a fraction of the month’s impact:
- The original Earth Day in 1970 had 20 million participants across the United States.
- Initially a domestic event, Earth Day became truly global in 1990, when 200 million people across 141 countries engaged in festivities.
- Earth Day has continued to grow in relevance, with the UN even choosing the date to sign the historic Paris Agreement.
Why Celebrate Earth Month With LIFECORE® Eco-Friendly Flooring?
A key means to celebrate Earth Month is to make long-term, sustainable decisions for your own life. One way to do that is to install eco-friendly flooring with LIFECORE®. We value sustainability through every facet of our business — here are just a few examples of how.
Proven, Certified Sustainability
LIFECORE® is nationally known for sustainability. Our flooring boasts several sustainability certifications, including:
- FloorScore® Indoor Air Quality Certified, setting a standard for hard flooring surfaces to promote better indoor air quality.
- Indoor Air Advantage Gold™, certified in compliance with the most rigorous indoor air quality emission standards in the United States.
- Phase 2 Carb Compliant, dictated by the California Air Resources Board to ensure products are certified and in compliance with legislation requiring wood flooring products to meet acceptable levels of formaldehyde.
- Lacey Act Compliant, a federal regulation that prohibits illegal trade, transportation, and harvest of wildlife, fish, plants, and trees.
Environmentally-Conscious Harvesting
LIFECORE® uses selective harvesting, meaning we only harvest mature, commercial trees on a rotational cycle. This process allows younger trees to grow while removing aging trees — leading to sustainable, natural regeneration in our forests. Our responsible wood waste management program also ensures full use of raw materials in areas of process improvement, product innovation, and manufacturing.
VOC Safe Manufacturing Processes
The LIFECORE® commitment to sustainability extends from our harvesting through our manufacturing. Most hardwood flooring brands use manufacturing processes that increase formaldehyde levels in each plank. Formaldehyde is a volatile organic compound, or VOC — compounds that emit harmful chemicals into the air. We manufacture our floors using Zero-Add® Technology, producing flooring among the lowest levels of formaldehyde on the market.
The Best Eco-Friendly Flooring Options From LIFECORE®
Some flooring brands only offer niche, specific eco-friendly selections within their catalog; not at LIFECORE®. Our entire selection of engineered hardwood floors is eco-friendly and manufactured using aforementioned Zero-Add® Technology. Through diverse styles, including distressed, stained, and rustic variations of species such as Acacia, Hickory, Maple, LIFECORE® customers can ensure they match the style of their home without sacrificing environmental-friendliness. If you’re looking for sustainable, refined style in hardwood flooring, you’ll find a LIFECORE® selection that meets your standards.
